I managed to watch the documentary film by Chi Po-lin, the director of the Golden Horse Awards winner for best documentary, “Beyond Beauty, Taiwan from Above](看見台灣)” over the weekend. The Director, Chi Po-Lin, an ex-civil servant, with an experience of 20 years’ as a professional aerial photographer, quited his job and embarked on his dream project “看見台灣” hoping to bring forward the message of environmental awareness without coming across as “too documentary”.

His aerial shots of the landscape above Taiwan is so breathtakingly beautiful and yet subtle to bring across the message that he is trying to convey.

The film start off like a tourist promo video slowly morphs into an ecological cautionary tale. Its natural scenery truly reflect the name – “Ilha Formosa” — beautiful island, given by the Portugese more than 500 years ago when they first set foot on the island.

But within a short span of time, the island is losing its natural settings giving way to economic development of high-tech industry, commercial farming, real estate industry and over population, all in the name of material progress pursued by human greed and negligence.

Director Mr. Chi message that he hopes to bring across is simple and straight forward – to present a realistic view of the growing environmental problems in Taiwan. To make people be more conscious of what is happening around them right now at this time and to think about what the future will be for the next generation(s) if people continue doing what they are doing now.

Watch the trailers of this Taiwan’s awarding winning, highest-grossing documentary movie below. For a few minutes of your time, it could changed the path of future generations.

WHAT YOU DO NOW HAS AN EFFECT ON OUR FUTURE GENERATIONS, BE CONSCIOUS OF WHAT YOU ARE CONTRIBUTING TO THE ENVIRONMENT NOW – HOWEVER SMALL IN EFFORT.
